Theatre Arts: Music & Dance
Musical Theatre develops a strong skill-base in singing, acting and dancing with the ability to combine these core skills convincingly. It’s important that musical theatre training should develop an individual’s ability in all three disciplines and the integration of these skills is most effective in combination with other dance class training. Having these qualities will put any performer in a strong position. For these reasons, think carefully when choosing a Musical Theatre course. It’s not uncommon for many acting or dance courses to include musical theatre as an ‘add on’ rather than provide specialist training in the subject. Students will learn the history, origin, story, music and choreography of selected musicals. They learn acting and musical theatre performance techniques, while developing self confidence, poise, and stage presence. The emphasis will be on voice development, characterization, memorization, stage craft and audition techniques.

Jazz style dance is what is seen in many Broadway type shows. It teaches rhythm, stage presence, balance, coordination, turns, leaps and routines from simple and basic to advanced and complex and is a great complement to Ballet and Classical Music Theatre training. Students are taught basic isolation moves which will help further improve their dance coordination. It can combine such styles such as musical theatre, character, and lyrical. Classes include warm ups, across the floor combinations and routines.
Tap requires a great deal of coordination and is a fun and challenging style of dance. Various styles are taught including traditional, rhythm, Broadway and musicality tap. Younger children are taught at a slower pace which helps build up their coordination and skills.
